With the center of gravity maritime industry over recent decades progressively moving eastwards, South Korea is today a giant in both shipping and shipbuilding. Its largely family-controlled industrial enterprises are nowadays increasingly engaged risky business experiments abroad, which on occasion fail spectacular manner. By following story how one family-run economic actor invested unsuccessfully Philippines, I combine an exploration political-economic factors involved this failure with investigation these larger structures entangled complex family inside Korean conglomerate. The forced separation between that ensued case illuminates changing competing ideals “waterborne” capitalism twenty-first century.
